Reflecting on a Year of Handmade Clothes

May 29, 2017

One year ago today I made my first shirt! It wasn’t great. It’s a Seamwork Akita. I had no idea what I was doing. I especially had no idea about fitting. When I was snipping the last of my threads on it, I cut a hole in the sleeve.…

Deer and Doe Melilot Dress Hack

May 20, 2017

Once I got my Melilot fitting properly on the back, I knew I needed to make a dress version. I used some Art Gallery rayon from Stitch. To change the pattern, I pretty much just extended the hem down. I liked the way the skirt part of the Seamwork Adelaide…

T-shirt comparison

May 8, 2017

It’s pretty obvious that the Plantain fits way better than the Lark! Look at those shoulders…ick. I’ll definitely just be copying necklines from the Lark onto the Plantain for my next shirts. Still, the Lark is a good run errands t-shirt.    …

Deer and Doe Plantain

May 7, 2017

I woke up at 5am last Tuesday and just could not get back to sleep, so I whipped up this Deer and Doe Plantain. I did a size 46 graded to 44 at the waist. I really like it, and I think it fits better than the Lark! I wore…

Lodo Dress

April 30, 2017

I decided to dip my toe into sack dresses with the Lodo dress, and I think it was pretty successful! I really shy away from shapeless dresses, but something about the Lodo appealed to me, and that might be that it’s not entirely shapeless (it has a subtle cocoon shape),…

Lark Tee

April 23, 2017

I bought the Lark Tee pattern last summer and it has sat in my sewing bin since then. I finally ordered some fabric a couple of months ago and didn’t get around to sewing one up until today. I went with a cap sleeve scoop neck. My serger was not…

On the way back from Skye we stopped at Blair Cast On the way back from Skye we stopped at Blair Castle where they had a great fashion exhibit from their collection. They also had a room of stunning needlework collected or created by one of the Duke’s daughters in the 1800s.

With our extra day, we went to Lochcarron of Scotland for a fabric mill tour. We were going to spend the day exploring the Scottish Borders but found a giant bulge in the tire of our rental car so we anxiously drove back to drop it off, avoiding as many of the millions of potholes as possible.

Then we headed to our stately hotel for our last day before heading home: a spa day complete with afternoon tea and yes another tasting menu.

We drove to one hike and turned right around when we saw the crowd. But we did get some gorgeous views, a tour at Talisker, and an incredible tasting menu @scorrybreacrestaurant.

Then to our stylish B&B. The next day we headed to Skye but stopped at Glencoe for an easy walk around a beautiful little loch.

The castle was a filming location for a Christmas episode of Downton Abbey, and there were photos everywhere. In the little cafe a woman asked if she could take a photo of the photo over our table and I said “sure, I love that show” and she looked at me dead serious and said “yeah of course!” Like duh.
Very full day in Edinburgh: National Museum of Sco Very full day in Edinburgh: National Museum of Scotland and the Dr. Who exhibit, lunch in a building from the 1500s, Edinburgh Castle, shopping, Dovecot studios (textile gallery), and the Scotch Whiskey Experience. We logged almost 8 miles of walking then took a taxi back to our amazing hotel.
